Stereo equipment

A good stereo system is something our boat is lacking. I think that will be our next big project. I was thinking of sealing the anchor locker, getting rid of the mirror in the cabin and using that cabinet as a housing for a big sub.We never use taht anyhow. Any thoughts on that? Is that a rule of thumb on the number of batteries needed per X number of watts on a stereo system?
